Needs Assessment regarding Financial Exploitation
Posted about 2 years ago by Sammy Wade Crowson
Dear SPNPA Member and APRN or APRN Student:
I am requesting your help with a brief needs assessment regarding your perspective on financial exploitation, also known as financial abuse of older adults.
Although this topic is a serious concern in the United States, it is frequently unrecognized and grossly underreported.
Older adults are especially vulnerable to financial fraud, scams, and exploitation with billions of their dollars lost.
Financial exploitation (abuse) of older adults is considered a serious public health problem.
In 2021, consumers age 60 and older filed over 450,000 fraud reports (and many go unreported with an estimated 7.8 million cases annually ) with total losses of more than $2.9 billion per year (Federal Trade Commission).
Nurses and APRNs have frequent close contact with vulnerable populations in different settings and their role may be vital in disclosures of potential abuse and/or protecting them.
I would appreciate your input on this brief assessment.
